1- My stock main jet was a 145 (1999 bike).
2- Your mechanic is right- maybe. Don't trust everything you read on the internet. But my guess is that you can judge by some of the feedback to these posts that some folks are relatively reliable. Plus, we aren't charging you $65 an hour.
3- It has been my experience that a dealer will put his best mechs on the best bikes that come in- the Savage is a low-end, minimal profit (sales, accesories, repairs) bike, so it gets the worst mech in the shop.
4- It just doesn't take a pro to work on an air-cooled, single cylinder, wet-clutch bike.

My suggestion for you and your Jardine: Put it on yourself. Screw around with the mixture screw and see if you can get it where you like. If you can, good. If not, try monkeying with your jets.

Oh yeah, a less restrictive pipe means greater airflow out of the system. Provided that you have the ability to get more air in (ie- you may have to change your filter), more air overall will pass through the engine. If you don't add gas, it'll be more lean.
